Capilano University ESL Settlement Assistance Program

Volunteer English as a Second Language Tutors

  • Provide one on one tutoring or small group instruction to adult learners who wish to acquire skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing and comprehension of English.
  • Engage in a collaborative process with learners to determine learners’ goals and expectations.
  • Prepare lesson plans and support learners as they connect to the broader community.

Why should you do it?

  • Develop new skills and self confidence.
  • Help a newcomer or immigrant improve his or her English skills
  • Meet new people and learn about another culture
  • Get a  reference for a job (after six months)
  • Participate in your community

What are the qualifications?

Teaching experience or equivalent skills, excellent written and oral English skills and a caring  and respectful attitude.

Extensive Training and Ongoing Support Provided by Program Coordinator

Commitment Required:

2 hrs of tutoring /week, plus travel and prep time

Six months commitment

Squamish Early Childhood Development Team


Make Squamish a better place for children and their caregivers -- This new community group's mission is to take action and make things better for young children and their families. They are looking for volunteers to join their group and contribute ideas as well as help develop already existing ideas such as:
  • Fun activities for kids and families in the evenings and on weekends
  • Encouraging local businesses to be more family friendly and acknowledging the ones that are
  • Opportunities to learn and share parenting tips and skills
  • Ways to help people connect: moms and moms, neighbours and neighbours, dads and dads, seniors and young kids

So far, they have already created a calendar of free activities for families and kids that has been published in the Squamish Chief.

Special Olympics

Coaches and Admin Volunteers Needed for Special Olympics --Volunteers at Special Olympics hold different positions. On the frontline, coaches inspire and teach athletes in sports, including 5- and 10-pin bowling, alpine skiing, basketball, bocce, cross-country skiing, curling, figure skating, floor hockey, powerlifting, rhythmic gymnastics, soccer, softball, snowshoeing, speed skating, swimming, and track and field. No experience is required to be a coach—we provide the training as long as you supply a winning attitude! Behind the scenes, volunteers are needed for non-sports roles—help with fundraising, sit on the executive, act as secretary or treasurer or even recruit volunteers! Whether you have a little time or a lot, there is a fun and rewarding position for you.

Canadian Cancer Society 2010 Relay for Life

Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life is a celebration of survival, a tribute to the lives of loved ones and a night of fun, friendship and fundraising to beat cancer.  In joining us, you are helping to make cancer history.

The Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life involves teams of up to 12 people who participate in an overnight non-competitive Relay. Participants take turns walking, running, or strolling around a track. Teams consist of people representing corporations, communities, families and friends. The event is done overnight for 12 hours to reflect that cancer never sleeps.

Description of Volunteer Positions available:

Join the planning committee for Canadian Cancer Society 2010 Relay For Life event in Squamish. There are a variety of positions available from chair positions to sub-committee positions. Each role has a different time commitment from half and hour a week to 2 hours a week. We have something for everyone.

A variety of positions are available:

  • TEAM DEVELOPMENT – Help with team retention and recruitment

    TEAM FUNDRAISING COACH – Help teams with their fundraising

    ACTIVITIES - Sub Committee members - Help plan and execute the activities at the 2010 Relay

    FOOD & BEVERAGE – Coordinate food and beverage needs

    LOGISTICS – Help plan the event site and set-up.

    DAY OF VOLUNTEER CHAIR – Help recruit & coordinate all day off volunteers

    SPONSORSHIP  - Help secure sponsorship and think of new businesses to approach

    COMMUNITY AWARENESS sub – committee members to help spread community awareness of the CCS and Relay For Life

Canadian Cancer Society

Each Spring the bright yellow daffodil is one of the first flowers to emerge, representing renewal and hope.

The Canadian Cancer Society’s Daffodil Campaign is just around the corner and we need your help!

Daffodil Team Captains are needed to help coordinate the sale of daffodils at one location in your community by seeking out a location and recruiting volunteers to help out at your location.  We are looking for friendly, outgoing people with enthusiasm!

Ongoing Positions:

Leadership Volunteers: We are looking for leadership volunteers to join our team in Squamish to represent the Canadian Cancer Society in the community. Our volunteer team supports and promotes cancer prevention initiatives, CCS programs and services and fundraising activities in the Squamish area. Minimum term commitment is one year.


Emergency Aid Volunteer: Emergency Aid is the Canadian Cancer Society's financial assistance program to assist eligible cancer patients with treatment related expenses. We are looking for an Emergency Aid volunteer to meet with cancer patients in the Squamish area to conduct confidential needs assessments. Time commitment in minimal with only a couple referrals a year. Training provided.

Squamish Environmental Society

EARTH DAY VOLUNTEERS – Squamish Environmental Groups are working together to organize a 40th Earth Day at Stan Clarke Park on April 24th. Are you interested in helping create a fun and exciting Squamish Earth Day celebration? We need a Poster Designer, a BBQ Chef, and a Fundraiser.  We will also need people during the event to help organize canopies, drum in the drum circle, etc. Earth Day is a fun family celebration with local bands, kids’ activities, art, and dance.

MINUTE TAKER - The SES is looking for an energetic Volunteer to join our environmental team to help take accurate notes of our monthly meetings, and most importantly to circulate notes to board members within a week of the meeting. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about our wonderful community and Squamish environmental matters.

Time commitment: 1 1/2 hour meeting and writing up afterwards, once a month

WEBMASTER – We are looking for an individual to help us develop an innovative and interactive website with advice and collaboration from a high end webpage designer who is a board member and regularly update website with event and meeting information.

Time commitment: 2-3 hours/month

Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon

British Columbia Conservation Foundation

Bear Aware - Help with community/bear conflicts by donating your time and skills. This position can be short term or long term. It may include door to door education, garbage patrols and fruit picking. A training manual and education are provided. This is an excellent addition to your resume and life experience.

Vancouver Coastal Health

Resource Assistant: A resource assistant is needed for the Squamish Public Health unit. Duties would include compiling prenatal packages, postpartum folders, Tobacco reduction packages, making poster boards and other administrative duties.

Health Clinic Assistant: A health clinic assistant is needed at Squamish Public Health.  Duties would include assisting with parent-infant drop in, school immunizations, flu clinics, health fairs, greeting and assisting arrivals, checking in and registering clients.  Some duties may include assisting in mobile clinics.

Child Clinic Assistant:
A child clinic assistant is needed at Squamish Public Health. Duties would include welcoming parents as they arrive with their children, checking attendance and assisting in weighing babies.

**Must enjoy people and helping people, be organized, energetic and reliable. These positions are suitable for youth, adults and seniors. Times are during the day on weekdays only. **

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Squamish 

Become a Big Brother/Sister - Adults 19 and older, become a big brother for a boy or a big sister for a girl age 7-12. Share hobbies and other interests such as biking, hiking and swimming during weekly visits of 2-4 hours over the course of a year.

In School Mentoring Program - Adult mentors provide fun for children in elementary schools. Pairs spend one hour a week playing games, sports, doing arts and crafts  or hanging out in the playground.

Literacy and English Language tutor: Fun and exciting opportunity! Become an English  language and literacy tutor!Tutor someone who needs help with literacy and/or English as a second language. District of Squamish

Dog Walkers: Volunteers are needed to help walk the dogs at the municipal dog pound located at 39903 Government Rd. (across from Shannon Estates). Walking will be done between the hours of 9:00 and 1:00 pm from Monday to Friday, and 10:00 to 2:00 on Saturday and Sunday. Very flexible.

Hilltop House

Program Assistant: Assist with recreation programs for seniors - crafts, baking, cards, games, manicures, music gardening, singing, bingo, dancing and much more. Must be friendly, courteous, patient, reliable and compassionate. Hours needed from Monday to Friday 8:30- 4:00 , there is a possibility of weekend shifts after the daytime training is completed.

Birthday Tea Server: Companions/Servers are needed for Birthday tea parties that are held once a month. No Experience necessary. Must be clean, tidy and patient.

Massage Assistant: Assist staff during the Gentle Touch group (massage) for our extended care residents. Volunteers would be required to gently massage residents on arms/legs/back and shoulders in either a bed or a wheelchair. No experience necessary, training will be provided. Wed mornings from 10-12.

Bingo Helper: Assist residents during bingo games to help them find the numbers on the cards. Must be on time and patient. Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-3.

Sea to Sky Community Services

Driver: Drive Clients into Vancouver for medical/legal appointments. These are clients with disabilities, chronic pain, etc. and are not able to drive. Other clients cannot afford transportation into Vancouver. Must be a safe driver,  non-judgmental and able to work 3-6 hours a week to total 12-24 hours a month. The volunteer would need to have their own car and pay for gas themselves. There would be no cost to client for gas.

Drop in Center: Be a support to the homeless in our community by helping out at the drop in center kitchen. This position includes preparing food, handing out plates and cleaning the kitchen at the end of shift.
