Youth Access

Parental Permission Required for Youth Visitors

The Hotspot is a family friendly site where we encourage families and children to come to play and learn together. Children and Youth are welcome to use the lab on their own but as we cannot monitor the websites that they visit, or be responsible for material that they obtain from the Internet, we require parent permission for youth to be allowed to access our computers unsupervised.

The Hotspot is supervised by staff and volunteers who aim to keep a special eye on unaccompanied children, however parents should know that we do not have a filter on our Internet connection and thus it is possible for unsuitable material to be accessed by unaccompanied children who are using the lab. It is helpful however that the public location and high visibility of the computers is a deterrent against accessing inappropriate content.

The focus of the permission form is not only to make sure that parents are aware that their children are accessing the Internet at our public space, but also to encourage communication between the parent and child regarding the risks and dangers of the Internet and how to be safe online.
